A year end message from our band president, Deb Watson

Hello everyone:

2022 saw us emerge from the pandemic slowly but surely, and very much overdue, Midnight Blue Jazz Society was once again performing for both local and international audiences.

The Ironwood Stage & Grill in the arts and culture hub of Inglewood is Calgary’s oldest and boldest neighbourhood and continues to be a favourite spot for us to wow the audience with our greatest hits.

An important part of our vision is to support arts and culture in Calgary and surrounding areas, which took us to Canmore to support the Valley Winds Music Association at their spring dance.  A bus ride and overnight stay in Canmore highlight the trip.

We were fortunate to participate in the Big Band Gala (designed for seniors) at the Hangar Flight Museum along with the Springbank Big Band, Hippocratic Oath, and Razzamajazz.  It was heartwarming to witness the seniors thoroughly enjoy the afternoon of music, dancing and doing the twist!  Thank you for the standing ovation!!

Normally, we wind up our rehearsals in late May early June, but this year we worked hard right up to July for a couple of reasons.  We were honoured to be invited to play for a 50th anniversary celebration in Acme (parents of our piano player).  Shortly thereafter, we were on our way to Cuba to participate in the Havana International Jazz Festival from July 10th – 17th.  It is hard to describe in a few words the impact this trip had on our group – the musical and cultural experiences will stay with us forever.  Not to mention the laughs and good times, oh the memories!

Despite the busy summer, we still made sure to hold our annual MBJS golf tournament where participants vie for the coveted “Shaft” trophy as well as our annual barbeque to enjoy the culinary skills of our members via a potluck dinner.

Collaborations and partnerships with other groups is a wonderful way of bringing music to life and one relationship we hold dear is that with Glitterverse Productions.  After more than two years, we were thrilled to partner with Glitterverse to bring big band burlesque back to the stage at the historic Grand theatre which has spanned over a century as a hub for Calgary’s art and culture communities and was the perfect venue for this show.  With over 200 people in attendance, it is clear that big band burlesque is back and we are looking forward to the next show in the spring of 2023.

I wish to express my heartfelt thanks and gratitude to the Board of Directors of Midnight Blue Jazz Society for all your hard work and dedication over the past year – you are the best!  A huge thank you to all the members of the band; without your dedication and commitment we simply wouldn’t be where we are today.  A special thanks to our artistic director, Lael Johnston.  Lael’s tremendous contributions continues to benefit the band each year and, we look forward to the many more years under his direction.

All the best for the holiday season.

Deb Watson
